The "casa das hortensias" is a traditional and restored typical madeiran home set on an apron of some of the island's most magnificent feast of colour and splendour on the rugged, vineyard terraced, and gloriously unspoilt greenery in the almost fairy-tale-like village of arco de são jorge. the idyllic surroundings are ideal for those guests who wish to spend peaceful holidays, away from noisy city centres, or busy towns in a rustic, country terrain. The silence and quietness that reigns upon the house is a powerful invitation to relaxation and contemplation. long naps, lazy afternoons, quiet days and even plenty of time to read that book that you been meaning to finish for so long can be enjoyed easily and restfully here. it is also a perfect start to meet the locals and their ways in madeira. A way to discover the still authentic and original culture and traditions of old madeira. Surrounding it there are many places to be visited and admired: the village centre of arco de são jorge itself, são jorge next door, santana, faial, porto da cruz, machico, boa ventura, ponta delgada, são vicente, seixal and porto moniz. Madeira's capital, funchal, is only 45 kilometres away. the casa da hortensias was also the home of bela (which means beautiful) and her husband viriato - your friendly hosts at the home. They converted their former family vineyard cottage into a fine bed and breakfast establishment with few rooms and loads of personal attention. traditional arts and crafts, fine embroidery and a touch of comfortable homely ambience inspired the warmth and well lit interiors of the home. Each room has its own private well equipped and well lit bathroom. The two double beds in two of the three bedrooms are family heirlooms and have been sleeping the family for generations. In the rear bedroom two large twin beds are provided for guests who prefer not to sleep in double beds. The mattresses are fresh and new, but the old family touch of care and love remains in the frame and head set. Old antique furniture and well preserved clothing cabinets, bed side lamps and homemade drapes accomplish a texture of authentic madeiran taste unlike any other seen in many of the madeiran bed and breakfast establishments. Everything is well preserved, clean, and ordered.
